In a Nicaraguan population-based cohort, SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence reached 28% in the first 6 months of the country's epidemic and reached 35% 6 months later. Immune waning was uncommon. Individuals with a seropositive household member were over three times as likely to be seropositive themselves, suggesting the importance of household transmission.

Embryos were recovered 3½ days post coitum from females of three replicate large- and small-selected Q-strain lines, together with their unselected control lines. Selection had been carried out by D.S. Falconer, resulting in large and small lines which differed two-fold in adult body weight. Females of the large lines yielded significantly more embryos than those of the other lines. Embryo cell number showed significant heterogeneity among replicates, but was similar in large, small and unselected lines. The data are not consistent with the hypothesis that the divergence in adult body weight is due to a uniform difference in rate of cell division throughout development.

Summary
Tick statistics are impressive. Some 907 tick species have been named. Their only food is blood, of which some ticks consume relatively vast quantities (several hundred times their unfed body weight). Some take 2 weeks or more to feed. Often they only feed three times during the whole of their life cycle (which may take 7 years to complete). They feed on mammals (including humans), birds and reptiles. Their geographical distribution ranges from sub-arctic through equatorial to antarctic regions, and habitats range from desert to rainforest. They even survive submersion in seawater as they feed on seabirds diving for fish. But the most important tick statistics concern their ability to transmit pathogens (disease-causing agents). And our greatest challenge is to devise efficient and effective means of controlling ticks and tick-borne pathogens.
Ticks transmit a great variety of disease-causing agents to humans (viral, bacterial and protozoal), including bacteria that cause Lyme disease, the reports of which increase in number year on year. About 80% of the world's cattle are infested with ticks. As a result, ticks are the most economically important ectoparasite of livestock. The impact of ticks on livestock producers in the developing world is a contributing factor to poverty.
In this book we have brought together experts from the tick world to express their views on the key advances in tick biology, diseases and control. Tick systematics and evolution highlight fundamental changes in our understanding, particularly for hard (ixodid) ticks, their life cycles and historical zoogeography (Barker & Murrell).

Widespread and increasing resistance to most available acaracides threatens both global livestock industries and public health. This necessitates better understanding of ticks and the diseases they transmit in the development of new control strategies. Ticks: Biology, Disease and Control is written by an international collection of experts and covers in-depth information on aspects of the biology of the ticks themselves, various veterinary and medical tick-borne pathogens, and aspects of traditional and potential new control methods. A valuable resource for graduate students, academic researchers and professionals, the book covers the whole gamut of ticks and tick-borne diseases from microsatellites to satellite imagery and from exploiting tick saliva for therapeutic drugs to developing drugs to control tick populations. It encompasses the variety of interconnected fields impinging on the economically important and biologically fascinating phenomenon of ticks, the diseases they transmit and methods of their control.

Today's complex geo-political climate has forced the U.S. armed services into new operational strategies. The prevalence of international terrorism, the threat from chemical and biological weapons, and the pressure to “do more with less” has placed increasing demands on the military. This new operational environment requires highly mobile troops having enhanced decision-making capability provided through the rapid transfer and dissemination of information to each member of the squad. What is missing is the ability to process and use this information via an Intranet at the level of the individual soldier. The purpose of our work has been to develop, evaluate and implement such a wearable conductive network for the dismounted soldier.

The ability to integrate electrical functionality into textile garments is becoming increasingly desired for consumer devices, military applications and for companies with large distributed workforces. This technology has the potential to facilitate the transfer of information and increase efficiency in many arenas. One of the major hurdles that has hindered the wedding of electronics and clothing has been the need to wash the resulting garment. This paper describes a study of the long term effects of washing and dry-cleaning electrotextile elements.

The ability to integrate electrical functionality into textile garments is becoming increasingly desired both on the battlefield and in the work environment. In order to accomplish this, the issue of compatibility of mechanical properties between dissimilar materials needs to be addressed. Textiles are typically selected for comfort while electrical materials are chosen for superior electrical properties with secondary consideration given to properties such as flexibility. As a result many attempts to integrate electrical functionality into textiles result in stiff, unwieldy garments that have difficulty gaining user acceptance.
Part of the electrotextile work done at Foster-Miller has focused on the integration of these dissimilar materials in a manner that does not degrade the wearability of the garment. Our work has included the development of textile cables that carry power and data using both electrical and optical media. In order to assess the wearability of these cables a method was needed of testing their stiffness. Several methods of measuring textile stiffness existed but did not address the many issues and material characteristics unique to conductive textiles.
